Setúbal Best Sporting In Shootout

Vitória de Setúbal have won the first edition of the Carlsberg Cup, with Sporting confirming once again their problems to score from the penalty area.

Sporting manager Paulo Bento had said that his men would look at this game as if it was the Champions League final but the Lions only showed that their minds and attention were somewhere else.

Sporting failed to produce any chances during the first half, and Setúbal seemed more interested in keeping their opponents from scoring than in creating any opportunities.

The game reached half time with a goalless score, but Vitória came into the second half with the trophy in mind, and Cláudio Pitbull could have opened the score in the 50th minute but the post prevented him from scoring a free kick, with Sporting goal keeper being completely helpless.

Sporting started reacting and Simon Vukcevic almost scored for the Lions in the 64th minute but his shot went just wide.

Both sides were still constantly in attack, but not very effective, and the game reached the 90th minute with 0-0 in the scoreboard.

Vitória looked happy as they knew Sporting had been very poor from the 18-yard box and that's just what happened once again. Sporting missed three out of five penalties, while Setúbal only missed two, and goal keeper Eduardo emerged as the team's hero after saving three penalty shots.

Bento said afterwards: "We did not make a good game, we were better in the second half, but we controlled the game during the 90 minutes.

"Vit. Setúbal only created one chance through a free kick, we did not create that many chances either and the game ended up being decided in the penalty lottery."
