Chalana's Benfica Future Decided Today

Benfica coach Fernando Chalana could be waving goodbye to his managerial post at Estádio da Luz after the team were held to a draw by Marítimo on Sunday...

Chalana was appointed as manager of Benfica last week, with chairman Luís Filipe Vieira having stressed that he could well stay on as boss the end of the season.

However, the former Benfica winger had a chaotic first week at Estádio da Luz, having seen his team being eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Getafe and returning to Lisbon with just one point after their weekend trip to Madeira.

The club board will meet today to discuss the team's future in light of Chalana's failure to steer the club towards winning ways, with many in the corridors of power apparently advocating the appointment of a new manager.

With the Portuguese league having a two-week break for the Carlsberg Cup final to take place, this could be the perfect time for the arrival of a new coach, who would have several free days to get to know his squad.
