Alex: Benfica's Offer Was Poor

Fenerbahçe attacking midfielder Alex insists that he was approached by several European clubs last summer, only to turn down every single offer...

The Brazilian international's previous contract expired at the end of the 2006/07 season, with Alex having received offers from European clubs, keen to add such a highly-rated player to their ranks.

One of clubs that showed interest in Alex's services were Benfica, who had lost longtime captain Simão Sabrosa to Atletico Madrid and were in dire need of a new playmaker.

However, he has revealed that the Portuguese offer was unsatisfactory, saying: "Financially speaking, Benfica's offer was very poor."

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old admitted to have had offers from German clubs, but added that he turned down talks with Borussia Dortmund and Hertha Berlin as it was his wish to play in European competitions.

"The two German clubs were not going to play in European competitions, although there is an interest in playing in that country," he said.

Turkish Dream

Alex is enjoying a fine season at Fenerbahçe, having seen his side progress to the Champions League Quarter-finals after defeating Spanish rivals Sevilla.

The former Palmeiras talent has confirmed that European success was one of the reasons that made him sign a contract extension with the Turkish champions.

"The president said that he would bring new players and make a strong team for the Champions League.

"That made me stay," he concluded.
