Authorities relegated Boavista and deducted points from FC Porto and Uniao Leiria for attempting to fix league matches in Portuguese soccer's biggest ever scandal. The league's disciplinary committee ruled that Porto tried to bribe referees in two matches in the 2003-04 season, and deducted six points from the club which will still secure its third straight league title this weekend. It also fined the club Euro150,000 (US$230,000) and barred chairman Jorge Pinto da Costa from the bench during matches for two years.

Porto punished in Portugal soccer scandal

The league disciplined two other first-division clubs for attempting to fix league matches. Boavista dropped to the second division and Leiria lost points. All three clubs denied the charges.

Five referees also were found guilty of corruption and drew suspensions ranging from 2 1/2 years to six years.
