Manchester City's Swedish manager Sven-Goran Eriksson waves to the fans before a football match at Anfield in Liverpool, May 4. Eriksson is expected to be ousted as Manchester City manager after just one season in charge, has been offered a three-year contract to manage his former club Benfica, local media have reported.

Sven Could Reject Benfica

Sven-Goran Eriksson is contemplating turning down an offer from his old club Benfica because he believes bigger and better opportunities will come his way.

The Manchester City manager feels he has been effectively handed his notice by club owner Thaksin Shinawatra and met with Benfica's president Luis Felipe Vieira on Wednesday night.

Although the Swede is still pondering the offer on the table from Benfica, the club he has managed twice before, it is understood he and his advisers believe his experience and the job he has done at City mean other offers are sure to follow.

City boss Eriksson confirms Benfica offer

Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed he is considering an offer to return to his old club Benfica after being told he has no future at Manchester City under Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra.

Eriksson, who has had two successful previous spells at the Portuguese giants, met with Benfica's president Luis Felipe Vieira and incoming director of football Rui Costa in Manchester on Wednesday evening.

"I've had a meeting with the Benfica people," Eriksson said. "I'm considering the offer and it could be a step forward in my career. Let's see what happens."

Toni Not Interested In Sven Reunion At Benfica

Portuguese coach Toni insists that he will not ask for a place in Benfica's Rui Costa-led revolution...

The 61-year-old coach was Sven-Göran Eriksson's assistant manager during one of his stints at Benfica and has been linked with a return to the Lisbon-based club, should the Swedish veteran join the Eagles.

However, the Benfica board seem to prefer Carlos Mozer as Eriksson's assistant and Toni, who is currently coaching Al-Etiffaq, has made it clear that he will not ask for a place at Benfica.

PAOK Eye Adriano

PAOK F.C. coach Fernando Santos is reportedly in Oporto to find some reinforcements for his squad...

The Portuguese tactician is reported to have a good relationship with Porto president Pinto da Costa and will try once again to add more depth to his squad with some of the Dragons' least-used players.

Santos is allegedly keen to sign the Brazilian striker Adriano, who was Porto's best goal-scorer during the last season, but has had few chances to suceed this campaign because of Lisandro López's stunning form.

Eriksson Confirms Benfica Talks

Manchester City manager Sven Goran Eriksson has confirmed that he met with Benfica officials on Wednesday.

With speculation intensifying about Sven Goran Eriksson's future at Manchester City - the consensus being that it is very short-term - Portuguese giants Benfica are said to be desperate to persuade the Swede back to Lisbon.

Eriksson has already enjoyed two very successful spells at the Stadium of Light (1982-84 and 1989-92), winning three Portuguese Liga titles and one Cup for Benfica, and taking them to two European finals.

Sporting Track Caneira

Valencia defender Marco Caneira has apparently attracted the attention of his former club, Sporting Clube de Portugal...

A Bola claims that full-back Marco Caneira is one of Paulo Bento's main targets for the new season.

The player's versatility, given that he can play on either flank or even in the middle, is apparently his major selling point. What's more, he could yet be available at a discount or on loan due to Valencia's poor financial situation.

Benfica On Sven: No Comment

Benfica have refused to be drawn out on reports linking them to Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson.

The media and general public have declared Eriksson to be all but axed, following a boardroom bust-up between he and Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra, and rumours are rife that the Swede will return to Lisbon to fill the vacant post at Estadio da Luz.

Portuguese television channel TVI claims that Benfica chairman Luís Filipe Vieira and would-be director Rui Costa have travelled to Manchester to conduct talks with a candidate for the coaching job, but the club declined to confirm the validity of those reports.
